A Tale of Two Days...

Welcome back all you loveable loveables, Colleen/Crackleen here (depending on what "language" you speak)! Sorry for your day without excitement, we spent Tuesday night at a cabin in New Hampshire and were busy "being at one with nature". (Translation, I've got a skeeter bite on my bum and have been sneezing nonstop, but I swear, I love nature.) To recap, we woke up on Tuesday morning in Montreal and raced for the English signage border and all of the treasures Vermont and New Hampshire could bring. The border cop made it into the top ten nicest police officers we've ever met when he a- didn't yell at us, b- laughed with/at us, and c- gave us a tip on Vermont: it's beautiful even if/when you get lost. With his directions and blessings, we left Canada for good and began to wind through the lakes of Champlaign.

As lunchtime rolled around, we asked our tour guide, Jill Garmin (not to be confused with Isabelle as we weren't in our Spanish hour yet), where some good eats were. As we drove past some "snack shacks", aka tents in people's front yards, we decided to take a slight detour for a restaurant approach. Suffice to say our detour was an adventure in and of itself and Shaggy's was everything we hoped for and more. Since we planned to cook hotdogs over the fire for dinner, we were happy to see that Shaggy’s provided alternative grill foods like cheeseburgers and corn dogs and soon made the half hour trek back to our original route. The monsoon muffled some but definitely not all of the beauty of Vermont, and before we knew it we had arrived at the one and only Ben and Jerry's Factory where tours were led every ten minutes. Talk about heavenly convenience!! We made it into the 4:20pm tour and enjoyed our samples before heading to the flavor graveyard where Nancy Pants taught us how to ride a cow.

After some quality seconds with the B&J Bovines, we raced back to the car and onto our cabin in the hopes of arriving in the woods before nightfall. Our timing was good, as was our luck, depending on your seat in the car and point of view. Unsure where I'm going with this? Imagine you're in the car with us for a second: If you see a bear in the woods not more than 20 feet from your car on the strange possibly deserted road that may or may not house your cabin at the end of it, do you a- roll down the window closest to the girl figuratively crapping her pants, b- drive like the wind and hope it didn't see you and won't follow you down the road to eat you in the middle of the night, or c- ask politely if it has seen any moose nearby as you'd really really like to see one before you depart the moose states of New Hampshire and Maine? We chose a... and I could barely keep my hands steady to hold a camera much less snap a picture, and so the bear made some threatening eye contact and ran off to join his mother... who was 3 feet away. We managed to snap a picture of the house I'm sure they have taken as their own for your viewing pleasure:

The bear spotting site was not next door to our cottage, hence our safety and livelihood, and so we checked into the cottage and waited for a fire to light itself. Our cottage manager, who was on a whole different spectrum of road trips lasting 5 years to date, started a fire for us and did his best not to laugh as we learned how difficult it truly is to roast hot dogs on thick sticks. In an effort to make friendly conversation, he asked us how our stay was in Canada, and as we each looked down, we remembered that we were all sporting Canadia hoodies that we had so earnestly bought while on the road... in Canada. We made sure to "burn the nature off' the roasting sticks and moved along to dessert: marshmallow, or BONBON (word of the day in Espanol, yo), roasting and s'mores!!! Nancy led the way with the first marshmallow that was perfectly roasted... so well in fact that it slid off her nature free stick and into the fire. Just sharing a taste with those who have roasted mallows before us.

THIS morning, Wednesday morning, we woke up with nature coming out our ears, or nose if you're allergic to foreign items such as trees, grass or mold. We packed our bags and hopped into the car and on to Freeport, Maine where we passed entertaining sights such as Hobo Junction (a theme park complete with miniature golf and extra benches for hobo sleeping pleasure, I'm sure), a McDonalds that is an otherwise normal looking house with a few Mickey Ds signs out back for the drive thru, and an Abercrombie and Fitch that has honestly taken over a library for parent and teen enjoyment. We made a quick stop at the L.L. Bean flagship store, its flag being a gianormous boot near the side entrance (I promise pictures are forthcoming!!), and then again at Maine's desert before kissing goodbye to Freeport.

As we rolled into Portland, we decided on a seniors dinner (before 5) to beat the crowds at the Portland Lobster Company where T*Star conquered her fear of foods that watch you while you eat them. It was a momentous occasion that we topped off with a picture of T*Star and Colleen and a life sized lobster whose shirt (in case you can't read it) says: The Cheapest Tail In Town... and the back says EAT ME!. This gave us plenty of time for the Bug Light lighthouse and the Portland Headlight Lighthouse. Even the fog couldn't take the beauty out of that second one, though fisherman at the Bug Light pointed out that normally June and July are full of perfect, beautiful weather, not the 59 degree fog that we found upon arrival. We assured them that the cool was welcomed by the three of us, and bought postcards to insure that we got the feel of the perfect weather version.

Our last stop in Maine was a small confectionary in Scarborough, aptly named Len Libby, where one can find until 9:30pm on a weeknight a life-sized chocolate moose named Lenny and 3 (count them 3!!) black bear cub sized bears made of dark chocolate named Libby and company (ok, I forgot the cubs names, but you get the idea).

It was the perfect set up for the one thing Jill had no feature for: Moose finding. With 2 miles left on the road in Maine, and white flags in hand, we were about to give up on seeing a living and breathing moose when low and behold, there were break lights ahead. Had we not assumed there was traffic and groaned, I'm sure no moose would have appeared, but we were all able to shriek and squeal with glee as a REAL LIVE WILD MOOSE ran across the road safely a good 10 feet in front of us. Way to pull through, Maine, you might just be our favorite state yet! We giddily crossed the border into Massachusettes where we set up shop in Danvers for the next two nights to get a better appreciation and understanding of Boston.

We are even more than moose excited for tomorrow morning's main event: PICKING UP EVABUG AT THE AIRPORT!!!!! Have a safe red eye flight, Evabug, and we'll see you pronto!!!! To the rest of our adoring fans, our apologies for going a night without words, hope this unbelievably long recap made up for it! Don't wave any white flags of hope on our blog pictures, the future may hold moose for all of you...

Shouldn't someone be driving YOU around, Princess?

Bonjour from Montreal! Or as we say..."What the heck does that sign say?? Where did all the English signs go???"

It's been another exciting day on the road for these three traveling chicas, and tonight we've found ourselves back in Canada. Our morning started with a free hot breakfast that was taken away while we stood trying to decide between cold cereal, oatmeal, and freshly made waffles. Apparently they're not joking when they say breakfast ends at 9:30. Exactly. So we ate another breakfast of Cheerios or yogurt and bananas in the car on our way out of Rochester, NY. Nancita took the wheel today and after her first two turns were in the wrong direction she wondered aloud if it was really her day to drive, but we cheered her on and off we went.

As it's Day 4 of East Coast Road Trip 2009 we think it's time to give a shout-out to some of our favorite road trip tunes so far. We've decided (after several hours of singing along to the 90's station on Sirius) that our road trip theme song has to be How Bizarre by OMC, with honorable mention going to I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers and That's Not My Name by The Ting Tings. To keep ourselves from getting delirious, every so often someone will yell out, “Dance Interlude!!” and everyone will break into dance. As a result, there now seems to be an official road trip dance move. It looks like something out of a Billy Blanks workout video and involves discoteca sound effects by Colleen. Don’t worry, Eva—we’ll teach it to you as soon as you get here!

I think Nancy talked about the Road Trip Princess Tiara in her blog yesterday. We have determined that there are two reasons that someone may be granted the tiara:
1) If they act like a diva.
2) If they do something great to contribute to the trip.
For example, Colleen got the tiara for asking why we didn’t have green M&M’s for her, and I got it for scoring us a free hotel room tonight. I can’t remember why Nancy got it, but let’s just say she spent most of the day in it!!

Nancy drove us all the way to Montreal today (5.5 hours) and one of our favorite moments came when we reached the Canadian border. Border patrol is pretty serious and we’re…well…we’re not. We had to pay a toll as we exited New York and entered Canada, and as Nancy pulled up to the toll booth and rolled down her window the guy working the toll booth grinned at her, “Hey Princess, how are you? Must be rough, eh? Shouldn’t someone be driving YOU around?” None of us remembered til then that she was wearing the tiara and the toll booth worker with his long grey ponytail laughed as hard as we did as Nancy blushed with embarrassment. Oops! We had a little trouble getting ourselves together before facing Border Patrol, but fortunately we got through with no problems.

When we arrived in Montreal this afternoon we got ourselves checked into a hotel and after having to explain the tiara to the hotel staff twice we headed downtown for dinner. We went to a restaurant recommended by the hotel and ended up eating on the patio at an adorable restaurant overlooking Rue Crescent (ooh la la!). The waitress kept speaking to us in French and every time she did it Colleen looked like she was staring at a velociraptor. Seriously, they speak a lot of French here! It’s fun feeling like we’re in another country, though. Especially since…you know…we are. And since we are, we decided we needed to eat some French food, so naturally crepes were the way to go. We stopped at a little corner crepery after dinner and Nancy had a strawberry cheesecake crepe while Colleen and I had Nutella crepes. (Mmm…Nutella.) After dessert we scoped out the site of the Montreal Jazz Festival, which starts tomorrow night. Such a bummer that we’re missing it by one day! Stevie Wonder is apparently playing tomorrow night, too. It was fun walking around and seeing the set-up though, and we sat by a fountain and people-watched for a bit before deciding it was time to head back to the hotel for the night (but not before Nancy announced that there was a mosquito in the middle of Colleen’s forehead and got her to smack herself directly in the face).

Sooo…now Pants is in bed, Colleen just added some ice to Big Blue (shout out to Julia and Jon!), and she and I are finishing up the blog for the day. Tomorrow we’re headed back to the States, where we’re sure to enjoy reading road signs in English again. One of our trip highlights is on the agenda for tomorrow, but I don’t want to ruin it for you, so check back tomorrow to hear all about it. We can’t wait!

Hope you’re all well! Sweet dreams from Canada!
Trish, Colleen, & Nancy
P.S. We added a couple of photos tonight but we'll be going back to add photos to our previous blogs in the next couple of days, so feel free to look back at our older posts to see the photos we weren't able to post the first time around!

And then there were three.

The day started off at Bro*Star’s house in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan! We hit the road at 8:00 after emptying Big Blue and reorganizing it was off to Detroit Rock City to pick up Colleen (A.K.A. Crackleen A.K.A. Glamour Diva Extraordinaire). Everything was going great, T*Star and myself anxiously awaited her arrival with “Road Trip Princess Tiara” and a “Welcome to Michigan” poster in hand!! I graciously crowned Crackleen only to find out she had challenged my bright orange pants with her bright red pants. WTF?! What a diva! We decided to take her with us anyway…

After a quick visit to the World’s Largest Tire in Allen Park, Michigan we dug out our passports and headed across the bridge to Canada. While crossing the boarder, our boarder patrol cutie ordered to remove our (fabulous) sun glasses! Before too long he was telling us about his last visit to Switzerland, we totally won him over. That’s how we roll. (Please read to the tune of “That’s not my name” by the Ting Tings.)

Canadia (Yes, that’s how I’m spelling it) has a lot of farmland and a lot of wineries, none of which are open on Sundays (I guess Canadian don’t drink on Sunday… whatever!) As we were driving through Niagara wine country, T*Star caught a peak of Ball’s Falls. Gotta love Canadia’s road signs. The drive continued only to be disrupted by a disastrous snack attack! (No joke!) I was literally attacked by a small duffle full of snacks, I only cried a little from the pain… and then I ate crackberries out of the bag (a treat we discovered in Spain).

As we rolled into town, we were excited to see the falls. So excited, we missed them. Well, T*Star and Crackleen missed them. I believe my exact words were, “Guys, I just saw the falls, they were back there” (or something like that). After driving past them a few times and admiring the most perfect rainbow EVER, we grabbed some dinner before walking down to get a closer look of the falls. SO pretty! We admired them, we loved them, we licked them (just kidding, it’s water, yo!) Then we walked the strip near the falls and took some classic photographs to be shared a little later. (We promise to put up pictures on a night we’re not so tired.)

Spanish hour was only Spanish ½ hour yesterday and there was no word of the day! Today, Spanish hour was an hour and a half and included 2, count them, TWO Spanish words of the day. Cataratas and Cascadas! They both mean falls, no, not like when you fall, like a waterfall! Say it with us, CATARATAS… CASCADAS… muy bien! You’ll speak Spanish in no time! This is an excellent time to mention our Spanish Immersion Road Trip Program! Did you ever want to learn Spanish? Well! You’re in luck! With the Spanish Immersion Road Trip Program, you will spend at least a ½ hour every day Spanish ONLY Spanish (Even the GPS, Isabel). By the end of the program, you will be so bilingual, people will think you’re Hispanic. (**Disclaimer** Tan not included. Possibility of sunburn.)

So now, here we are in Rochester, New York! Another day awaits us tomorrow back in Canadia! Montreal here we come!

Signing off, Chicas in Travelbug Pants

One more apple, jogging down the road (music and lyrics for the classic snake game by Emilie Kahle, aged... 6?)

Ok, so I had to make an apple reference, but I don't jog. Well I did, once, but that's a marine corps obstacle course story for another day. Colleen here, here being Washington, DC, where I'm anxiously packing my bags (PASSPORT INCLUDED, CANADA HERE WE COME!!!). Tomorrow morning I fly into Detroit Rock City where after a trip through Hell, (who knew there was a Hell, Michigan?) T*Star and Pants will pick me up. We will be 3/4 complete until Evabug joins us in Boston, and the blogging will really pick up as we'll have almost all road trip roles filled: a driver, a navigator, a cooler digger, and a blogger (cooler digging will have to be multi-tasked, wish us all luck, especially the apples).

I apologize if only half of this makes sense, I'm currently on a caffeine induced, sugar enhanced state of delirium. It's been a roller coaster of a day, between trying to keep my eyes open and mouth mostly closed without slouching (it's much trickier than it looks!). Another story for another day, suffice to picture me with a gaping mouth and still squinty eyes for about 3 pictures before I hope I got the whole *not smiling SOOO big* thing down.

The important thing is that the snack bag is packed up (and the only snack I've been stealing throughout the weekend were the crackberries, soooo impressive for a big eater such as myself), my clothes bag is as little as can be for a rolly suitcase, and my keys are safely in my purse ready to go... as opposed to the last time I wheeled a suitcase out of here (just 36 short hours ago) to find that my keys were living large on my kitchen counter. Thats a good $50 fine for being locked out before office hours :(

That was the past and the Niagara Falls are the future, bring it on!!!
Girls, I'll see you in the morning!!
Evabug, hope Phoenix is treating you well, we're ready and waiting for your arrival now :)
Everyone else, happy trails wherever you are!

You're too late, they turn the waterfall off at 5 in the UP, eh!

Today got off to a great start despite a combined total of 3 1/2 hours of sleep, eh! But were we on the road by 6? You betcha!

Wisconsin did not have as much cheese as I had hoped but T*Star has assured me that there will be cheese on the way back. (Praise da Lawd)

It was an amazing nine hour drive full of talking, music, dance interludes and a few bad jokes. Don't make me flip you the parakeet, eh!

In a frowny sad way, it was Gibraltar deja vu when we finally made it to Munising. (Darn those glitches in the Matrix.) In 2001, the final leg of our Gibraltar trip was to be spent in Morocco. It was the trip that never was because T*Star, Colleen, myself and perhaps Eva, (Eva? Were you there? I'm drawing a blank.) set our alarms but never got up to catch the ferry. (Hey, we were sleepy!) Well, today we got up but didn't make it in time for the last 4 o'clock ferry to Painted Rocks! (Damn the man and his ridgid ferry schedual.) *tear*

Instead T*Star and I went for a hike! First down to see Miners Castle, then down 1 mile through the mosquito infested trail that led us to the most amazing beach on Lake Superior. After couting the 20,000 mosquito bites on our bodies, while enjoying the beach, we decided that 20,000 was not enough. After a quick Off! bath, we follwed the trail down to Miners Falls. It was great, until we were informed that the falls were turned off at 5. What the heck?? Oh, it was a joke. Silly. Falls don't get turned off. Only about half a dozen mosquito bites on this trail, at least we have something to look forward to next time. In the end, the beach and the falls were so beautiful, I don't remember the bites... well, maybe they were erased from my memory by the Benadryl I had to take when my pinky was bitten and began to swell. Mmmmm drugs.

Thankfully, dinner was provided in the form of pasties. (No, not those! They are pronounced pass-tees. You have a dirty mind.) Mmmm for meat filled pie thingies with ketchup and ranch dressing.

Tomorrow is a new day with a new island to take on! Bring it Mackinac! You ain't got nothin' on me!

It's midnight and I can barely keep my eyes open but I'm..... umm happy!

Besos y Abrazos,
Nancy

P.S. One 5 lb.bag of ice is not enough for the blue cooler but a 20 lb. bag is way too much on top of two 5 lb. bags. You try try finding the turkey under 30 lbs. of ice in the back seat of a Jeep. You'll come up with apples every time! What did we learn? Don't listen to Nancy. (T*Star is making me type, "Always listen to T*Star".... when it comes to ice.)

Bienvenidos a our blog!

For those gringos out there, that's Spanglish for "Welcome to nuestro blog!" We've never blogged before so bear with us as we figure it out.

So we're four friends who met in Spain eight years ago and we're about to embark on our next adventure--a 17-day road trip spanning 19 states! Colleen lives in DC, Eva lives in Phoenix, Nancy lives in Garden City, and Trish lives in Minneapolis. During the course of the trip there will be anywhere from 2-4 of us, but regardless of the number there's sure to be lots of fun! The trip will start in Minnesota, where Nancy has just landed. Nancy and Trish will make their way through Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan before heading to Detroit to pick up Colleen. From there the trio will head through Canada, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and then on to Boston where we'll pick up Eva. From there we'll work our way through Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and then to DC before heading back to Minnesota by way of West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois (and Wisconsin again). We're going to try to keep y'all informed of our daily adventures, and we'll be taking turns updating the blog while we travel so check in regularly and please feel free to leave us comments. Time for Trish to start packing! Colleen, you're next! Eva, change your flight--we want you here by Friday! XOXO, Nancy & Trish
